"Ultra high energy cosmic rays - present knowledge and challenges for current experiments"
|
Cosmic rays were first discovered by Victor Hess in 1912 through a series of experiments with balloon flights. He found that the ionization in the atmosphere increased with height, contradicting the idea at the time that the source of the ionization was the Earths radiation. From this time on, many experiments have been conducted in the continued search for these cosmic rays, the name given to the radiation by Millikan in 1925. Today I will be presenting the knowledge that has been obtained to date about cosmic ray composition, energies and their anisotropy at ultra high energies (UHE), focusing on the results from the Pierre Auger Collaboration, and will discuss the challenges that UHE cosmic ray detection experiments currently face.
