"Galactic Disks"

This colloquium is an overview of some of the current issues about galactic disks. Topics will include the structure and metallicity gradients of disks, disk heating, thick disks, and Galactic archaeology (fossil recovery by chemical tagging). I will describe the HERMES high resolution spectroscopic stellar survey, which we expect to start in 2012: its goal is to observe about a million stars for chemical tagging.
